Rome visit, June 2008 – 57

These pictures were taken during a trip to Rome in Jun 2008, where I presented a 2-day seminar on "Web 2.0".
I noticed this couple, sitting on the railing that separates the vehicular roadway from the pedestrian part of the Piazza del Popolo. I couldn’t tell if they were arguing, engaged in a who-blinks-first? contest, or just having a thoughtful conversation…
I can’t help wondering if this couple had any idea how many people would look at their picture (a little over 14,000 as of January 2012), and how many different bizarre blog postings — well over a hundred, at this point, from all over the world — would use the image of their conversation to illustrate their message. To see all the places where the photo has been published (at least, all of the ones that I’m aware of), see below…

…and t is being used in another blog post!
I was looking for an image to accompany a post on how to live with loved ones during the recession – specifically – to avoid the pitfalls of arguing and placing blame. I thought this image conveys very nicely the concept of two human beings that are unhappy with each other – nice shot.
You can see the post here:

there is an alt text attribution and a link back to this page.
Thank you for making it available,

Tudor,
Thanks for letting me know! Glad the photo was useful for your article.
Ed
Hey Ed, I think the recent one is Romanian, not Italian. You can see some similarities to Italian and Spanish, but odds are it is a Romanian blog. The blog author provides life coaching but I can’t tell how he incorporates the photograph into his themes.
orcmid,
Thanks for the clarification — I’m certainly not an expert in languages!
Ed
Hello dear friend,

This is great. You have a wonderful eye and are able to capture human nature very nicely.
Just wanted you to know that I used this photo on my site at:
Communication Skill Lesson Plan
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks — glad you found it useful for your blog. You may have noticed, from the notes that I’ve attached to the photo, that it has been published roughly two dozen times in the nearly two years since I took the photograph.
I’m always surprised when something like this happens, because these are extemporaneous, opportunistic photos — usually of something I just happen to notice out of the corner of my eye, and which I have to photograph in "candid" style, since I don’t know the subjects (and in this case don’t even speak their language), and can’t really ask them to pose for me…
And here’s another one. It adds an extra dimension to the pictures that I have for my article: "Communicating to improve family relationships". Thanks. Sally Powrie
Yet another use for your great image, thanks for sharing this Ed, I have used it to help illustrate my article on marital communications: improving-relationships.suite101.com/article.cfm/fun-rela…. The credit links back to this page. Many thanks,

Amy,
Thanks, glad you found the photo useful. As you may have seen from the notes attached to this photo, it has been published dozens of times since I took it some two-and-a-half years ago.
By coincidence, I’m in Rome right now — having just walked back to my hotel from a hight-tech computer conference that I’ve attended this week, on a path that led me right past the spot where this photo was taken, at the edge of Piazza del Popolo.
Thanks for posting this picture! You really captured the emotional intensity of the moment. I used this picture for an article I wrote on Suite101.com Here is the link http://www.suite101.com/content/divorced-and-co-parenting-how-to...

Julie,
Glad to hear that the photo was useful for your article. I had seen an item on my daily "Flickr statistics" indicating that you had linked to the photo … but unfortunately, the URL you’ve provided above appears to be "broken," according to my web browser.

Kelly,
Thanks for letting me know about the publication. And I’m glad the photo fit so well into the subject of your article!

Actually this photo (and use of it in blog posts etc) is probably illegal as EU privacy legislation expressly requires the photographed peoples’ permission before a photo can be published. And it doesn’t sound as if you got their permission as you say you don’t think they realise how often their photo has been used?
Jill,
Thanks for the note. I’ll try to track down the relevant EU privacy legislation (which sounds like it may be different than in the U.S.) and see what should be done. Usually the restrictions are aimed at "commercial" publication of a photo, e.g., in an advertisement or book etc.
Ed
Hi Ed. Thank you for posting this photo and making it available for bloggers. You are inspiring me do the same thing with my photos (although I am not nearly as talented a photographer as you). I used the photo for a post "The Controversy over Cloud Computing Energy Efficiency" on the objectivecloud.com blog. Thanks again.
Hi Ed, just to let you know I’ve used the picture in my post ‘When Is It Time To Move On From A Relationship’. You can see the post here: relationshipsuncovered.com/when-is-it-time-to-move-on-fro…
I’d appreciate it if you could link to the post from this page. Thanks a lot, and thanks for the great picture.

Hi Ed, just want to let you know that I have used this picture in my recent blog article.

Thanks — I had noticed the publication earlier today, and was going to post a link to your blog up in the "notes" section beneath the photo. But something is wrong with the HTML, and Flickr is complaining that it can’t add the new information. Haven’t figured it out yet … but anyway, thanks for letting me know about it.
